Privacy Policy

Introduction

Imanic ("we," "us," or "our") is an Islamic e-learning platform designed for children and teenagers. We are committed to protecting the privacy of our users, especially young learners and their families.

This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using Imanic, you agree to the practices described here.

Information We Collect

Account Information

When a parent or guardian creates an account, we collect:

  • Email address – for account login, communication, and password recovery
  • Name – first and last name of the account holder
  • Password – securely hashed, never stored in plain text

Optional survey responses. If you choose to answer our optional onboarding question or welcome survey, we store the answers you share. We use them only to understand what parents want and to improve our content. Answering is entirely voluntary and does not affect your account.

Student Profile Information

Student profiles are created by a parent or guardian, never by the child. For each student profile, the parent provides:

  • Name – the child's first and last name, visible only to the parent (see "Friends and Social Features" below for the one exception, which requires your explicit permission)
  • Date of birth – used to tailor learning content to the child's age and to apply age-appropriate protections. We infer an approximate learning level from it; we do not use it for advertising or share it.
  • Display name – a randomly generated nickname (like "BraveFalcon12") that does not include the child's real name and can be regenerated. This is the name shown anywhere other users could see the child, such as leaderboards.
  • Avatar – a customizable cartoon avatar provided within Imanic. We do not allow student profile photos.

We do not collect student email addresses, phone numbers, physical addresses, photos, or location data. Student accounts have no real email address. The only place a student can type freely is the question box under a lesson video, which is covered in "Asking a Teacher a Question" below.

Learning Activity Data

To provide our educational service, we track:

  • Lessons and activities completed
  • Quiz scores and progress
  • Points and badges earned
  • Time spent on learning activities
  • Questions a student asks a teacher under a lesson, and the reply (see "Asking a Teacher a Question" below)

This data is used to show progress to parents and students, and to improve our content.

Payment Information

If you subscribe to a paid plan, your payment is handled by Stripe, our payment processor. Your card details are entered on and stored by Stripe. They never touch Imanic's servers, and we never see or store your full card number. What we keep on our side is limited to your subscription status, plan, billing history references, and the email address on the account. You can view Stripe's privacy practices at stripe.com/privacy.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide and personalize the learning experience
  • Track and display student progress to parents
  • Send account-related emails (such as password resets, important service updates, or notices about changes to this policy)
  • Send you optional updates about new features, tips, or content, if you choose to receive these emails. You can opt out of these messages at any time by using the unsubscribe link in the email or by updating your email preferences.
  • Improve our educational content and platform
  • Process subscription payments (via Stripe, our payment processor. Card details go to Stripe directly and never touch our servers)

What We Don't Do

  • We do not sell your data. We never sell, rent, or trade personal information to third parties for marketing purposes.
  • We do not show ads. Imanic is an ad-free platform. We do not display advertisements to students or parents.
  • We do not use student data for advertising. Student learning data is never used for targeted advertising or shared with advertisers.
  • We do not make student profiles public. Nothing about a student is visible outside the app. Inside the app, other users can only ever see the student's randomly generated display name and cartoon avatar (for example on leaderboards, or through the parent-controlled Friends feature described below). They never see the student's real name, unless you explicitly turn that on for accepted friends.

Friends and Social Features

Imanic includes an optional Friends feature that lets students add classmates and compare learning progress. It is designed privacy-first and is controlled entirely by parents:

  • Off until you turn it on. Friends features are disabled unless the parent or guardian explicitly enables them, either during sign-up or later in the Parent Portal. You can turn them off again at any time.
  • Handle-only discovery. Students can only be found by their private, randomly generated display name (like "BraveFalcon12"), never by real name or email.
  • Real names stay hidden by default. Optionally, you can allow friends your child has accepted to see their first name and last initial (like "Zayd M.") so classmates recognize them. This is a separate, explicit choice and is off unless you enable it.
  • No chat or messaging. There is no way for students to send messages, comments, or any free-form text to each other on Imanic. Friends can only see each other's learning progress, badges, and scores. The question box under a lesson is not an exception: it goes to a teacher only, and no other student can ever see it.
  • Your choices are recorded. We keep a record of when and how consent for these features was given or withdrawn, so we can honor your decision.

Asking a Teacher a Question

Under each lesson video, a student can type a question about what they have just learned and a teacher at Imanic will reply. This is the only place in the app where a student can write freely, and it works under strict limits:

  • Private from other students. A student only ever sees their own questions. No other student can see them, search them, or reply to them. There is no public question board. The only people who can read a question are your child, a teacher at Imanic, and you.
  • The teacher answers a handle, not a child. When a teacher opens a question to answer it, they see the question, the lesson it was asked under, and your child's randomly generated display name (like "BraveFalcon12"). Your child's real name, date of birth, and account details are not shown on that screen.
  • No private channel to your child. A teacher can only reply underneath the lesson the question was asked on. There is no direct message, no email to the student, no live chat, and no way for a teacher to start a conversation with your child. Your child asks first, or nothing happens at all.
  • Answers are written by a person, not by AI. Every reply is written by a teacher at Imanic and read by them before your child sees it. We do not use a chatbot to answer religious questions.
  • Parents can see everything. The Parent Portal has a Questions tab showing every question your child has asked and every answer they received, for each of your children, any time you want to look. If your child is under 13, this review right is also guaranteed to you by COPPA.
  • We will contact you if we are worried. If a question suggests your child may be at risk, we will contact you as the parent or guardian. Where the law requires us to report a concern to the authorities, we will do that too.
  • Questions are kept with the lesson. A question and its answer stay attached to your child's profile so they can read the reply again later. They are deleted when the student profile is deleted, along with the rest of that child's data.

A note on what students type. We ask students to write about the lesson, not about themselves, and we never prompt a student for personal details. We cannot stop a child from typing something personal into a free text box, so if we find personal information in a question that does not need to be there, we remove it. It is worth telling your child that this box is for questions about Islam, not for sharing private information.

When We Share Information

We only share information in limited circumstances:

  • Service providers: We use trusted third-party services for hosting, payment processing (Stripe), video delivery (Mux), and email delivery. These providers only access data necessary to perform their services and are bound by confidentiality agreements.
  • Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or to protect the safety of our users.
  • With your consent: We may share information when you explicitly authorize us to do so.

Data Security

We take the security of your information seriously:

  • All data is transmitted using HTTPS encryption
  • Passwords are securely hashed using industry-standard algorithms
  • Access to personal data is restricted to authorized personnel only
  • We regularly review and update our security practices

Children's Privacy

Imanic is designed for children and teenagers, including children under 13. Because of that, the entire platform is built around parental consent and control:

  • Children cannot sign themselves up. Every student profile is created by a parent or guardian, who provides the child's information themselves and consents to its use as described in this policy at the time of creation.
  • We collect from the parent only what the service needs: the child's name, date of birth, a generated display name, and an avatar, plus the child's learning activity inside the app (see "Student Profile Information" above).
  • We never ask students for email addresses, phone numbers, home contact details, photos, or location. Students cannot message each other anywhere in the app. The one place a student can type freely is the question box under a lesson video, which goes only to a teacher at Imanic and to no other student (see "Asking a Teacher a Question" above).
  • Student learning data (such as lessons completed and quiz scores) is used only to provide the educational service, show progress to parents, and improve our content. It is never used for advertising.
  • Social features are off by default and controlled by the parent (see "Friends and Social Features" above).

If you are a parent or guardian and have questions or concerns about your child's information, or if you would like us to delete a student profile, you can contact us at salaam@imanic.online.

Parental Rights

As a parent or guardian, you have the right to:

  • Review your child's profile and learning data at any time
  • Update or correct your child's information
  • Delete your child's profile
  • Request deletion of your entire account and all associated data

To exercise these rights, contact us at salaam@imanic.online.

Data Retention

We retain your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide our services. If you delete your account, we will delete or de-identify your personal information within a reasonable period of time (typically within 30 days), except where we are required to retain it for legal or legitimate business purposes (for example, billing records or fraud prevention).

Aggregated and de-identified data (which is not intended to identify any individual) may be retained indefinitely for analytics and service improvement.

Cookies and Tracking

We use Google Analytics on our public marketing pages (such as the landing page, pricing, login, and registration pages) to collect aggregated information about how visitors use our site. This includes page views, referral sources, and general device/browser information. We use this data to understand how people find and use our site, and to improve it.

Google Analytics uses cookies to distinguish visitors. By using our public website, you agree to this use of cookies. For detailed information about what cookies we use, please see our Cookie Policy.

Important: We only use analytics cookies on our public marketing pages. The student learning app does not use Google Analytics. Student learning activity is tracked internally using our own systems and is not shared with third parties for advertising purposes.

Error Monitoring: We use Sentry, an error-tracking service, to identify and fix technical problems. When an error occurs, Sentry may collect technical information such as browser type, device type, and error details. This helps us maintain a stable and reliable platform. No personal information (such as names or email addresses) is intentionally sent to Sentry, and we actively strip login tokens and cookies from error reports.

Video Playback: Lesson videos are delivered by Mux, our video hosting provider. When a video plays, Mux processes technical playback information (such as IP address, device and browser type, and buffering/quality data) so we can stream video reliably and diagnose playback problems. Mux acts as our service provider, receives no names or account details from us, and is not permitted to use this data for advertising.

Your Rights (US, UK, EU, Canada)

Depending on where you live, you have legal rights over your and your child's personal information, including under COPPA (US), UK GDPR and the Children's Code (UK), GDPR (EU), and PIPEDA (Canada). Wherever you are, we honor the following for all users:

  • Access – ask what personal information we hold about you or your child
  • Correction – fix inaccurate information (much of it directly in the Parent Portal)
  • Deletion – request deletion of a student profile or your entire account and its data
  • Withdrawal of consent – turn off optional features (like Friends) at any time, or withdraw consent entirely by deleting the account
  • Complaint – lodge a complaint with your data-protection authority (for example the ICO in the UK or the OPC in Canada)

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at salaam@imanic.online. We will verify that you are the account holder before acting on a request, and we will never refuse a child access to the educational service because a parent declined an optional feature.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify you by email or by posting a notice on our website. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Your continued use of Imanic after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
